We Love the Humane Society of
Pagosa Springs

As part of our #RenewalsForGood initiative, Hexos IP will highlight charitable organizations to which we have made a contribution. Our contribution may include Hexos team members volunteering, a monetary donation from Hexos IP, or a combination therein. Hexos IP prioritizes organizations that champion environmental restoration, racial diversity and equity, and expanding STEM education. Additionally, Hexos invites input from its partners and clients to direct our involvement toward organizations and initiatives that are meaningful to them.

As we launch this initiative to spotlight a few of the benevolent organizations within our community, we’re pleased to feature the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs as this quarter’s pick of the litter. The Humane Society of Pagosa Springs is a private, nonprofit organization serving Archuleta County, CO. With dogged determination, they have pursued their mission to provide a safe haven for animals in need, to promote adoptions, and to reunite lost animals with their owners.

No bones about it, the story of the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs is one of generosity, ingenuity, and growth. The organization began in 1984 as an animal shelter and was initially funded by a nest egg provided by Debra Rinker Brown (who raffled a gold Krugerrand and donated the proceeds), and by a benefit concert by Dan Fogelberg — which fetched about $20,000.

In the nearly 40 years since its inception, the society has expanded in leaps and bounds. By the mid-nineties, the organization had outgrown its initial habitat and sniffed out an 11-acre property adjacent to an industrial park. Similarly, the Humane Society manages a thriving Thrift Store that has had to migrate twice to accommodate its growth.

The organization’s adoption program — averaging nearly one adoption per day — has helped countless animals find new homes. Additionally, the organization keeps a short leash on pet overpopulation through community education and aggressive spay/neuter programs. Without their efforts, it’s not a reach to say the Archuleta community would literally be herding cats. However, the organization recognizes it’s better to run with a pack and networks with other nearby shelters and adoption centers to maximize the paws-itive impact it has.

With the great work they’re doing, it’s not hard to see why this organization has us wagging our tails. The Humane Society of Pagosa Springs truly is the cat’s meow!
