As part of our #RenewalsForGood initiative, Hexos highlights charitable organizations to which we have made a contribution. Our contribution may include Hexos team members volunteering, a monetary donation from Hexos, or a combination therein. Hexos prioritizes organizations that champion environmental restoration, racial diversity and equity, and expanding STEM education. Additionally, Hexos invites input from its partners and clients to direct our involvement toward organizations and initiatives that are meaningful to them.
On April 12, 1980, a young amputee dipped his artificial leg in the frigid waters of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of St. John’s, Newfoundland. From here, Terry Fox set out to run roughly a marathon per day across Canada toward his home in British Columbia — on one leg. Osteogenic sarcoma had claimed Terry’ right leg a few years before. In the 16 months of follow-up treatment, the suffering of his fellow patients inspired Terry’s determination to complete what he called the “Marathon of hope,” and raise $1 million for cancer research and treatment.
While Terry’s inspiring trek raised more than its initial million-dollar goal — and even its subsequent goal of $1 for every Canadian ($23 million) — Terry was unable to complete his run. Tragically, over 5,000 km into his journey, Terry had to stop when doctors discovered that his cancer had spread to his lungs. Ten months later, Terry passed away.
Today, over forty years after Terry began his run, Terry’s legacy lives on in statues and street names throughout Canada; numerous documentaries and publications; and perhaps most importantly, through the annual Terry Fox Run. Organized and maintained by the Terry Fox Foundation, this yearly event is held all around the world to raise money for cancer research. To date, individuals and organizations have donated over $800 million.
Hexos is proud to honor the memory of one of Canada’s greatest heroes and highlight the great work of the Terry Fox Foundation. To learn more about this great organization, the incredible story of Terry Fox, and perhaps even find a Terry Fox Run near you, check out their website at terryfox.org. We look forward to seeing you on the track out there, eh?
